He Humbles and He Exalts

“My heart exults in the Lord: he humbles and he exalts.”  from the Morning Prayer Canticle, January 9th So often we think that “being humbled” is a bad thing. It may be a painful thing, but for a Christian it is most certainly a good thing, particularly when it is the Lord our Good God humbling us. Being humbled by God helps us to see who we really are, it strips away the protective pride that surrounds us. Only as we see more and more who we really are can we appreciate who God really is. Our littleness contrasts to His…continued

How to Be Happy

The Bible offers many reminders for us to give thanks to God, such as “ Always be joyful; pray constantly; and for all things give thanks; this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. If the Word of God and over 2000 years of Catholic spirituality has not been enough to convince us of the necessity of gratitude, modern psychology has confirmed that gratitude is one of the key practices that correlates with feeling happy in life. As Catholics we understand that there is more to life than just “feeling happy.” Feeling happy is…continued

Praising God, Loving Life

Indian Shores, Florida I was sitting at the beach tonight alone, but not alone. The waves whispered continuously to me of God’s love, the wind was His breath caressing me. I promise to submit myself to all that you desire of me, And to accept all that you permit to happen to me, Let me only know your will. This is the prayer…continued

One Small Light

Vigil lightOriginally uploaded by Lawrence OP Do we think we are too weak to make a difference? Too weak to change ourselves? We are most certainly very weak, but the good Lord knows our limits. He knows our very smallness. So He has made it unnecessary for us to need great strength to continue our struggle along the little way. Sometimes it is only very small things that we are able to do. Even in our weakness, we can choose to give thanks to our God during times of adversity and even to accept all that happens to us as…continued

Hopefully Waiting on the Lord

Reflecting on Psalm 4040:1 “I have waited, waited on the Lord, and He leaned toward me and heard my cry…”It is so very hard sometimes to wait. The tears come, the sorrow exists, the loneliness surrounds. The burden feels so very heavy, the cross is very real. But I can picture Him leaning toward me to listen, to hear me, to love me..40:2 “He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.”This desolation is a pit with slippery sides. I cannot grasp to pull myself…continued
